Nicole Langford serves as the Research Associate, Project Manager at the International Society for Technology in Education with the Research and Development team. Nicole comes to ISTE with 7+ years of research administration experience and 3+ years of qualitative research experience. Nicole’s research experience was centered around studying the career decisions of Ph.D. STEM candidates from underrepresented groups, focusing on what drove them towards or away from careers in academia. Through that work, Nicole developed a passion for listening to people talk about their experiences and storytelling through research – a passion she brings to ISTE.

Caitlin McLemore is a senior research associate and project manager at ISTE. She holds an Ed.D. in Technology Integration from Johns Hopkins and an M.Ed. in Elementary Education from the University of Florida. Prior to working at ISTE, Caitlin was an educational technology consultant with experience in curriculum design, educational research, instructional coaching, and teacher professional development. She also worked for eight years in PK-12 independent schools as an academic technology specialist. Caitlin is a Google Certified Innovator and Trainer, ISTE Certified Educator, and published author.

Director of Research
Brandon Olszewski (Ph.D.), ISTE’s Director of Research, is passionate about making research practical. He leads many of the organization’s evaluation and research efforts, as well as projects that focus on educational technology, product usability and design, the learning sciences, and adult learning. With over 15 years’ experience in program evaluation and research, Brandon has managed the implementation and evaluation of innovative projects funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, state departments of education, and private foundations. He has published on topics including educational technology, sociology, special education, workforce development, and social science methodology and psychometrics.

Session description

The purpose of this session is to increase visibility of the ISTE Research team and the value that evidence-based practices bring to solving educational challenges and improving teaching and learning. We will introduce a variety of research projects and share both findings and practical resources developed from those findings. Participants will learn about existing tools that they can immediately implement in their professional practice to enact change.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this session is to increase visibility of the ISTE Research team and the value that evidence-based practices bring to solving educational challenges and improving teaching and learning. We will introduce a variety of research projects and share both findings and practical resources developed from those findings. Participants will learn about existing tools that they can immediately implement in their professional practice to enact change.

Participants will be able to (1) articulate the value of the ISTE Research team, (2) describe the benefits of using evidence-based resources to inform practice, (3) improve the way they evaluate edtech products.

(1) Introduction – Who we are and what we do (5 min): Introduce team, share brief overview of projects and topics; (2) Course of Mind – debunking learning myths (10 min): Introduce project & interactive activities, participant exploration of learning myths, debrief and facilitated group discussion; (3) SkillRise – adult learning and workforce education (10 min): Introduce project & Profile of a Lifelong Learner, participant exploration of the Profile, debrief and facilitated group discussion; (4) Teacher Ready – edtech product evaluation and purchasing (30 min) - Introduce project & evaluation tool, live demo of the scoring tool, debrief and facilitated group discussion; (5) Introduction to the ISTE Research coLab– connecting researchers, industry, and educators (5 min)
