Session description
Outline
1. Introduction to World of 8 Billion Student Video Contest (15 minutes)
Presenter will share the video project, including all of the digital tools to support student learning and video production.
2. Presenter shares examples of student videos (including tools they used) (10 minutes)
3. Activity: Everything is Connected – Participants engage in a concept-mapping activity using interactive digital tools (created with a Google Slide) and working in collaborative groups. (15 mins)
4. Activity: One for All – Participants engage in a simulation game on resource management using interactive digital tools (15 mins)
5. Discussion and Wrap-Up – Participants reflect on how the video project and supporting activities can be used within their classes and partnering with teachers in other disciplines (5 mins.)
Supporting research
The content of the video project topics is supported by both the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for Middle and High School grades, especially the Disciplinary Core Ideas for “Earth and Human Activities (ESS3) and Ecosystems (LS2). The content is also supported by the C3 Framework from the National Council for the Social Studies, as well as the frameworks for two AP courses (Environmental Science and Human Geography).
Research indicates that video production is a valuable instructional strategy for positive content learning outcomes. Video production “facilitates connections to content, student motivation and engagement” among other benefits. (Norton and Hathaway, 2010).
