Session description

How can we ensure students are not just users of AI, but responsible co-creators and ethical citizens? This hands-on session guides K-12 educators through the globally recognized UNESCO AI Competency Framework for Students. Participants will use it to create an actionable curriculum map.

Outline

1. (15 min) Introduction & Framework Deep Dive: Brief overview of UNESCO's 4 dimensions and the Understand-Apply-Create progression model.
2. (15 min) Collaborate & Deconstruct: Attendees form teams and try to match one of UNESCO’s four dimensions to find 2-3 existing standards in their curriculum that could be easily adapted to meet the competency. (e.g., Ethics of AI -> Media Literacy in ELA).
3. (20 min) Artifact Creation & Mapping: Teams begin building their AI Literacy Action Plan to map out 3 tangible activities that move students through the Understand, Apply, and Create levels for their dimension.
4. (10 min) Share Out & Next Steps: Quick share-out of key takeaways and discussion of policy considerations, infrastructure needs, and teacher professional development.
