Dr. Janelle Couch is an Education Consultant for PowerUpEDU, serving schools and universities in Georgia to maximize positive impact through various learning/technology solutions, professional learning, coaching, and project implementation. Before joining the PowerUpEDU team, Janelle was a Lead Technology Training Integration Specialist and Middle School Math and Science Teacher in Cobb County School District, Georgia. Janelle is a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert (MIEE) and has vast experience supporting teachers and leaders in schools and at the district level with technology integration. Janelle consistently shares her passion and knowledge with others by presenting innovative technology and Microsoft tools at local, state, and international technology conferences.

Session description

Use Microsoft Tools like PowerPoint, OneNote, and Minecraft in innovative ways in the classroom to engage students and support student learning with activities and games. Move away from the typical use of these tools and leave the session with ideas, links, and games to use in your classroom.

Purpose & objective

This session helps teachers fight the struggle of disengaged students but providing innovative ways to use tools in a more gamified way. By the end of the session attendees will learn how to use PowerPoint in creative ways through various slide templates (that will be provided) and tips and tricks to keep viewers attention on the screen. Additionally, attendees will be immersed in an escape room game within OneNote where they will learn how to transform any curriculum into a fun and engaging experience. Lastly, we will jump into a Minecraft world and see the many ways to engage students, create games, and provide rich learning environments for all levels.

Outline

Opening/Introduction (approx. 5 minutes)
Minecraft: Going to the Nether, exploring various Biomes, or using Allow/Deny blocks, Minecraft will allow you create engaging activities for students. Create a Museum, Explore an Adventure Map, use the Book and Quill, Posters, Signs, Chalkboards, and NPCs to create a world of investigation, questions, and links to engage students in academic standards. (approx. 10-15 minutes)
OneNote: Breakout Escape Rooms in Microsoft OneNote are an ideal way to increase engagement and bring fun and challenging activities into the classroom. Through the use of password protected sections, teachers can intertwine classroom content with hints and puzzles to create a game-based activity that can offer alternatives to worksheets. (approx. 10-15 minutes)
PowerPoint: Up your PowerPoint game with engaging templates along with tips and tricks that catch the eyes and keep students focused on the content. In this session, we will look at ways to use PowerPoint more than a place to display text and images that support a lecture. We will look at design, movement, and ways to create games and activities. (approx. 10-15 minutes)

Attendees will need access to Microsoft PowerPoint, OneNote, and Minecraft. PowerPoint can be accessed via the desktop or online version. OneNote can be accessed via online version, however one step in the process shown does require the desktop version. Additionally, attendees will need a license for Minecraft Education to be able to use that set of features. Attendees are welcome to join even if they do not have access to all three tools.
