Session description
Purpose & objective
Last year, Stuart Gray, Jeff Harvey and I ran a project with high-school math and science teachers, to launch them into design thinking/creative process, challenging them to incorporate and/or explore some of their lessons and re-ignite them with a hands-on approach. We met with the teachers on four separate occasions and used Instant Challenges initially as icebreakers but then soon realized that IC could be the hook and possibly the lesson itself.
Outline
10 minutes - Hello & welcome
o Introduce ourselves
o Include what is Destination Imagination and what are Instant Challenges
5 minutes - Overview of the project we did at Western Quebec School Board and the link to Instant Challenges (IC).
o Include our initial project goals to introduce teachers to PBL and the creative process.
o Discovery of pedagogical power of IC, not only as an icebreaker, but also as a hands-on approach to teaching various pedagogical concepts.
o Explain what is an IC and that they come in three different forms.
25 minutes - IC #1 & Reflection question
o Through a common digital tool (ie Padlet) teachers will reflect and collaborate on the pedagogical links this Instant Challenge can offer. Open-ended guiding questions will be provided, such as What Went Well? Even Better If, what strengths did you bring to solving this IC, etc. A collection of reflection questions will be provided as follow-up resources.
o Teachers will also be asked to make and share the links they may see to their own subject and grade level.
20 minutes - IC #2
o Through a common digital tool (ie Padlet) teachers will reflect and collaborate on the pedagogical links this Instant Challenge can offer. Open-ended guiding questions will be provided, such as What Went Well? Even Better If, what strengths did you bring to solving this IC, etc. A collection of reflection questions will be provided as follow-up resources.
o Teachers will also be asked to make and share the links they may see to their own subject and grade level.
Resources
o How to use the materials effectively – ie pipe cleaners – twisted for more support, strong bases
o Where to get IC – QR code to DI site as well as a collection of other sites
o Instant Challenge reflection questions

Session specifications
Innovative Designer
- Students know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.
- Students develop, test and refine prototypes as part of a cyclical design process.
- Students break problems into component parts, extract key information, and develop descriptive models to understand complex systems or facilitate problem-solving.
