Sam Callahan is a 3rd grade teacher in Sioux Center, IA. In addition to his teaching, he is a district data management specialist and also owns a data consulting business on the side. He is also a Google Certified Educator and Seesaw Certified Educator. He is passionate about helping educators visualize and understand student progress through easy-to-read charts and graphs. When he is not teaching, working his magic in a spreadsheet, or creating data dashboards, he loves to spend his time reading, hiking, playing sports, and knocking out 100+ mile bike rides.

Session description

In this session, attendees will learn about 5 stages of data culture their school may be living in. After identifying their current stage, attendees will learn about potential next steps to continue improving in their use of data to guide decisions and ultimately, drive student success.

Purpose & objective

Attendees will learn about five stages of school data culture. (Dataless schools, data collectors, data organizers, data analyzers, data users)

Attendees will identify which stage of data culture their school is currently at.

Attendees will build a simple dashboard with help from an expert.

If successful, attendees will also walk out of the room with actionable steps to moving their school's data culture forward.

Outline

(Planning for a 90 minute session)

Presentation (45 minutes)

As attendees walk in, there will be a short Google Form for them to fill out. This Google Form will become the sample dataset for when we build a dashboard together at the end of the session.

1. Intro (2-3 minutes)
2. 5 Stages of Data Culture (12-15 minutes)
3. Data Culture Self-Assessment (5 minutes) - In this portion of the presentation, attendees will be asked to interact with each other to discuss why they placed themselves where they did.
4. Action Steps to Move Data Culture Forward (12-15 minutes)
5. Dashboard Demonstration and Playtime (5-10 minutes)
6. Dashboard Building (35-40 minutes)
7. Closing - Why We Really Analyze Data (3-5 minutes)
