Graphically illustrating musical structure in a way that aids student understanding can be invaluable for music or classroom instructors at any level. Searching for "musical structure" or "musical form" online will turn up numerous static charts. But what if these charts, or maps, could move in real-time with the music they represent?
The Apple Keynote app has unlocked this capability, allowing audio to span multiple slides. Using this feature, instructors can create dynamic, real-time representations of musical form, and other complex musical concepts, enhancing the learning experience.
This technology benefits both educators and students. Instructors can assign creative projects, encouraging students to design their own musical mapping animations. This fosters higher-order thinking skills, aligning with Bloom's Taxonomy. The success of this approach is evident in enhanced engagement, deeper comprehension, and the promotion of creativity. Students and educators alike can use this technology to bridge the gap between theory and practice, resulting in a more enriching and dynamic learning experience.
This hands-on workshop caters to K-12 and higher education instructors, making it easy to create engaging animations on Apple devices. The presenter will demonstrate several examples of musical mapping animations, and then guide participants through the process on an iPad. By the end, attendees will have created animations depicting the structure of a simple song. Moreover, they will have gained the foundational skills to create more complex animations, even for large-scale musical works. Those with Apple devices are encouraged to bring them for active participation, along with an mp3 of a simple pop or children's song (ensure the latest OS and Keynote version).
1. Introduction (3 min) - Welcome and brief overview of the presentation.
2. Understanding the Concept (5 min) - Explaining the core concept of musical mapping.
3. Methodology in Action (12 mim) - Demonstrating the method through a series of examples at three levels of sophistication: elementary (K-6); intermediate (secondary/higher ed general education); advanced (higher ed music major).
4. Engaging Activity (30 min) - Interactive hands-on session: creating a simple musical mapping animation with an mp3 of a popular or children's song.
5. Reflection, Questions and Conclusion (10 min) - Discussing potential applications of the technique in an educational setting and encouraging attendees to reflect on how they can incorporate this method into their own teaching. Then open the floor for questions, and finally summarize key takeaways.
Please note that there is no existing research focused on the particular type of musical animation mapping that will be demonstrated in this presentation. The articles listed here primarily discuss the broader value of animation as a tool for enhancing learning, rather than specific research related to the technique to be showcased.
