Dee Lanier is a life-long educator who is extremely passionate about issues of equity and inquiry-based learning. A career educator, Dee has facilitated racial equity and culturally responsive professional development globally through the lens of design thinking. Dee holds Undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Sociology with special interests in education, race relations, and inequity. Dee is an award-winning presenter, author of Demarginalizing Design, TEDx Speaker, Google Certified Trainer, Google Innovator, and Google Certified Coach. Dee is also the creator of the design thinking educational activities, Solve in Time!®, and Maker Kitchen™ and is the co-host of the Liberated Educator podcast.

Over 20 years, Ken Shelton taught middle school technology. He served on an Education Technology Task Force created by a former California State Superintendent of Public Instruction and has worked at the policy level with several state departments of education, ministries, and nonprofits. Shelton speaks and leads workshops on educational technology, equity and inclusion, anti-racism, multimedia literacy, cultural intelligence, visual storytelling, and instructional design. His credentials include Apple Distinguished Educator, Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert, and Google Certified Innovator. He won ISTE awards in 2018 and 2022. He was also named an influencer to follow by EdTech Magazine.

Henry Turner, Ed.D., is an award-winning high school principal, author, and nationally renowned speaker. Pointing to his unwavering commitment to equity and a student-centered culture, Turner was named 2020 K12 Principal of the Year by K–12 Dive. Turner is the author of the book “Change the Narrative: How to Foster an Antiracist Culture in Your School.” As a national speaker and coach, Turner works with educators, leaders, and communities to create a culture that commits to diversity, equity, and inclusion; empowers students’ voices; and addresses economic and racial disparities. Henry is an ISTE Community leader.

Session description

We can either proactively change and prepare our students or wait for the change and react. Artificial Intelligence is here, but are we prepared to help our students to respond to it? Participants will understand how bias plays a role in AI and how we can prepare our students.

Purpose & objective

Purpose: To help educators understand the intersection of DEI and AI in education, foster an understanding among educators about the significance of bias in AI, and equip them with tools that promote an inclusive educational environment.

Objectives:

Educators will understand how DEI relates to implementing AI tools in education.

Educators will be able to help students to understand the impact of bias in AI and how to address it.

Educators will learn about the AI tool that can be used to allow students to create a more inclusive school or class community.
