Research from the Education Endowment Foundation tells us that metacognition is a high-impact approach to improving the attainment of learners. Students with strong metacognitive skills are flexible thinkers, take an active role in their learning journey, and are agents of their own success. But what does this look like in the classroom? And given that there is only so much time and space within the curriculum, how can we integrate metacognitive approaches that will deepen learning within and across subject areas?
This practical workshop will explore approaches to metacognition, highlight where they already exist within your practice and discuss how to apply these to wider skill development. We will highlight the work Nord Anglia Education has been doing to enhance metacognitive development through the use of technology, and will model the different edtech tools available for making this growth visible to teachers and, most importantly, to students. Through discussion and interactive tasks, we will also consider how to create metacognitive cultures of learning in the classroom and how we can enable students to develop better awareness of themselves as learners and take ownership of their growth. Participants
The objectives of this workshop are to disseminate the work Nord Anglia is doing with the DNA Metacognition Project, highlight the importance of metacognition and how it can be supported in more classrooms, and make clear the ways in which technology can be brought to bear in innovative ways to support this goal.
