Purpose: Provide educators with time-saving AI tools to create question sets for students that can be used with the science of learning to make learning stick in long-term memory and serve as excellent formative assessment checks for understanding.
Objectives: As a result of participating in this session, participants will be able to:
1 - Understand the science of retrieval practice, spacing, and interleaving and why it is important for long-term learning.
2- Create a variety of question sets using AI tools that align with the science of learning.
3 - Routinely use question sets in formative assessments to create a real-time snapshot of where students are in the learning process.
Retrieval practice is important for learning because it helps to strengthen the connections between new information and existing knowledge in the brain. When we retrieve information, we are essentially rebuilding the neural pathways that encode that information. This makes the information more accessible and easier to remember. AI tools such as Eduaide, MagicSchool, and QuestionWell can help educators create targeted question sets of various types and difficulty levels in minutes. Tools like QuestionWell also integrate with Google Classroom, Schoology, Google Forms, Quizizz, and more to create formative assessments that give both the teacher and students a real-time snapshot of where they are in the learning process. Participants will walk away with a guide that summarizes each of these strategies that are supported by the science of learning and a list of tools they can use to deploy these strategies. There is a large body of research outlined in books such as Make it Stick and Powerful Teaching to support the positive impact of routine retrieval practice, spacing, and interleaving on long-term learning.
Introduction (10 minutes)
- Review the science of learning and the importance of retrieval practice
- Explain how retrieval practice can be used for formative assessment
Creating retrieval practice question sets with AI tools (15 minutes)
- Demonstrate how to use MagicSchool and QuestionWell to create question sets quickly and easily
- Discuss and show how to turn these question sets into formative assessments
Spacing and interleaving (10 minutes)
- Explain the importance of spacing and interleaving for effective retrieval practice
- Give examples of how to space and interleave retrieval practice activities
Creating complex retrieval practice question sets with Eduaide (15 minutes)
- Demonstrate how to use Eduaide to create complex question sets that vary in topics and question type
- Discuss strategies for using Eduaide to implement spacing and interleaving
Closing (10 Minutes)
- Use a combination of tools demonstrated to lead participants in a retrieval practice activity
- Give participants time to reflect on the session and ask questions
