Purpose:
Participants will understand how to effectively use Reading Treks in the classroom in conjunction with books to differentiate activities and enhance students' comprehension and background knowledge.
Objectives:
Educators will learn about the purposes of the layers of the different layers in a map. They will be able to open and close map layers as needed. They will be able to view the embedded images as full screen and generate talking points for class or small group discussion.
Educators will understand how to use the translation tool as needed for multilingual learners.
Educators will explore the components of the Teacher Guides and the suggested activities. Teachers can offer students options from the list of activities to differentiate instruction.
5 minutes-Introduction of the Presenter and show where to locate the Reading Treks on TeachersFirst
20 minutes-Presentation of 3 different Reading Trek maps and the accompanying Teacher Guide at different grade levels. The presenter will open and close layers and discuss the benefits of doing so. The presenter will demonstrate opening the images to full screen and ask open-ended questions to model how the teacher may use the images, especially those that are historic. The presenter will lead teachers through the components of the Teacher’s Guide and explain how the TeachersFirst reviews will be helpful for web tools that may be new to them.
