Dr. Marcus Borders, a Learning Innovation Coach with Ed Farm, supports educators and students in blended learning, personalized coaching, coding, and computer science in K-12 settings. He prioritizes elementary educators, students, and adult learners, emphasizing digital equity in urban communities. A recent doctoral graduate of Instructional Technology from Kennesaw State University, his research focuses on innovative technology coaching for parents of elementary learners. Marcus holds an Ed.D. and Ed.S. in Instructional Technology from KSU, an M.S. in Urban Teacher Leadership, and a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Georgia State University. He resides in Atlanta, Georgia.

Jordyn Zimmerman is a passionate educator and disability advocate. After being diagnosed as autistic at a young age, she did not receive access to augmentative communication until age 18. She now thrives on boldly showing up and redefining what is possible in learning spaces and throughout the broader community — and has personal experience challenging the status quo, which is featured in the 2021 documentary, This Is Not About Me. Jordyn is the Head of Product Strategy at The Nora Project, serves on The President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities, and is an Apple Distinguished Educator.

Session description

Join us for an interactive playground that showcase built-in accessibility tools that are often underutilized with student learning devices. Assistive technology provides essential tools for some students but benefits all students. Come explore what is possible and empower all your students to make the most of their learning.

Purpose & objective

Participants will discover the built-in accessibility tools and features on devices that students have. Participants will be learn about different exceptionalities especially ones that students may have. Principles of Universal Design for Learning will be shared as the supports that are required by some, are beneficial to many.

Outline

The playground will be hands-on where participants will be able to try a built-in accessibility feature on the presenter's device or the device the participant has brought with them.

Experiences that mirror real-life teaching and learning situations will be create to showcase how accessibility tools/features operate in the classroom.
