The field of literacy is only beginning to wrestle with the promises and perils of AI, particularly those students who may struggle with literacy learning. The purpose of this presentation is to share one experienced teacher’s exploration of generative and other AI tools with middle school students at a school for students with language-based learning differences. One focus will be on how AI can be leveraged to support writing without losing what makes learning to write so valuable. Further explorations of experiences these middle school students had with using AI to support learning will also be shared with the goal of looking at how AI can be used by and with students to support their learning. The ultimate goal of the session is to engage in a conversation about how AI can be integrated into literacy learning in ways that support students while still helping them to develop the skills and strategies they need to be successful in and beyond school. Participants will leave with some new ideas about how to leverage AI to support writing and learning, along with some specific tools that can be used in the classroom either with or by students.
