Suzan Brandt is the Chief Technology Officer of Mountain Brook Schools, near Birmingham, Alabama. In March of 2023, Suzan received the Innovative Technology Director Award by Tech & Learning. Most recently, she was featured by EdTech Magazine as one of the 30 K-12 Influencers to follow in 2023. Passionate about student voice, Suzan has been the license holder and organizer of TEDxYouth@MBJH for the past ten years. Suzan is actively involved in professional development and learning. She regularly presents at, ISTE, FETC, TCEA, ASCD, Tech & Learning, and the Alabama Educational Technology Conference.

Jeff McCoy currently serves as the associate superintendent of academics for Greenville County Schools, the largest district in South Carolina and the 44th largest in the nation with over 78,000 students. McCoy is active both statewide and nationally on multiple advisory boards including the National K12 Congress Advisory Board, National School Transformation Conference Advisory Board and the National Chief Academic Officers Working Group. He also serves on the board of directors for the Upstate Children’s Museum and 1EdTech. He and three of his colleagues recently published a series of Blueprints on Personalized Learning, Cybersecurity, and The Marriage of Information Technology and Academics. .

Donna is currently leading the CoSN Early Career K-12 CTO Academy and has been a CTO and EdTech leader since 1982. She has been quoted in national publications such as District Administration, EdSurge, EdTech, Tech & Learning, edScoop, Education Week, Forbes, and eSchool News. Accomplishments include Executive Committee and CoSN Board, recipient of the National ISTE Making It Happen Award, Sally Moore Award, National Withrow CTO Award Honorable Mention, EdTech Digest’s Trend Setter Award, and Marbury Technology Innovation Award and 2016 ISTE Distinguished District Award. Donna has presented at ALET, AETC, CoSN, AASBO, SSA, ACTE, SXSW, iNACOL, and ISTE.

Session description

Join us for a discussion on an easily replicated K-12 App Management model. Discover how two districts tackled the challenges of vetting, data security, and budgeting. Learn from their journey in optimizing student engagement and equitable access. Gain access to proven processes, forms, and insights shared in a Wakelet.

Purpose & objective

1. Participants will participate in an interactive discussion of strategies to efficiently vet and manage apps, secure data privacy agreements, and ensure curricular alignment. With these strategies participants will be able to managing apps effectively to ensure students have access to a variety of educational tools that enhance their learning experiences. This includes selecting apps that align with educational goals and standards and ensuring they are up-to-date and relevant.
3. Participants will participate in an interactive discussion of strategies to enhance student data security. Participants will understand examples of robust data security measures to safeguard sensitive student information, ensuring it is not compromised and to maintain trust and transparency between educational institutions and stakeholders.
4. Participants will participate in an interactive discussion concerning cost analysis and making data-driven decisions. The economic challenges associated with education require careful budgeting. Participants will be able to analyze data to allocate resources efficiently to meet evolving needs.
5. Participants will participate in an interactive discussion concerning student engagement.
6. Participants will review a plan to increase efficiency.

The processes are successful in that the time from request to availability has been decreased, student data is encrypted for security, and data driven decisions are made. The joint involvement of the CTO, CFO, and Curriculum Director is evident in the process.

1. Introduce the Panel
2. Provide QR code to resources (forms, processes, guidelines) and code for online input.

3. Review of project goals.
4. Review of shared strategies.

All other topics will be given equal time.
5. Sharing of flowchart outlining overall process and discussion of data collection.

6. Discussion of process to secure data.
7. Discussion of cost analysis and engagement and how this data drives decision making and sustainability.
8. Discussion of efficiency measures.

We will have an online sticky note available for participants to share ideas on each component of app management.

Supporting research

Our research included reaching out to other districts across the country to determine what is working and what is not. We did informal interviews with administrators, staff, and parents about the former process to determine areas of improvement. We reviewed free resources on the 1EdTech and SDPC websites.
