Bourbon County Schools
Students at Bourbon County High School developed an innovative project to teach Braille using 3D printing technology. Their initiative creates customized Braille learning tools, helping students with degenerative eye conditions. By combining modern tech with educational needs, these students are making a significant impact, enhancing accessibility and empowering visually impaired peers to learn Braille more effectively.

The Kentucky Department of Education’s Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) uses student centered, standards based, project-based learning principles to empower student learning and achievement. STLP provides a means for every student to design, make, connect and learn through technology utilization and creation of original digital content. Established in 1994, STLP has grown to support nearly 280,000 students from member schools across our commonwealth. Each spring, thousands of learners, educators, parents, legislators and community leaders come together to celebrate students "showing what they know" through projects, digital products and technical challenges at the STLP State Championship.

Session description

Kentucky's statewide Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) champions present their winning approach to design, make, connect and learn. See how this exemplar student project was built on the ISTE Standards for Students and Kentucky Academic Standards for Technology by giving students voice and choice to "show what they know."

Purpose & objective

In 2024, STLP State Champion student presenters will continue to showcase their award-winning technology-infused projects, addressing pressing challenges within their school and community. These projects exemplify the power of student leadership and innovation in leveraging technology for real-world solutions.

STLP projects remain firmly rooted in the latest ISTE Standards for Students and the Kentucky Academic Standards for Technology. Attendees will witness firsthand the transformative impact of student choice and voice in shaping their educational experiences.

The STLP State Champion projects for 2024 will be celebrated at the STLP State Championships in March 2024. These projects and their presenters serve as beacons of student-centered learning, reflecting a tradition of excellence that has spanned more than a decade. We are deeply grateful to the ISTE organizers for their continued trust in KySTE and the Kentucky Department of Education, allowing us to showcase these exceptional student teams on the global stage at the ISTE Conference.

Outline

Student leaders from the Kentucky Department of Education's Student Technology Leadership Program will share their state championship award winning technology rich projects, taking the audience through the inception, iterations and reiteration of their project idea.

As the best project presentation in the state of Kentucky, these teams will expertly guide the audience through each phase of the STLP project cycle, demonstrating their creations, sharing their research methods and findings, and highlighting the measurable impact their project has had upon their target. Throughout the presentation, STLP champions will pinpoint connections to the ISTE Standards for Students as well as the Kentucky Academic Standards for Technology. Each state champion project team clearly demonstrates how deeper learning can be realized through STLP involvement.

STLP projects are developed throughout the academic year and celebrated at a statewide championship event. Presenting their project at ISTE is the culmination of their championship run as they represent KySTE, their school districts, the KY Department of Education and all of Kentucky at this renowned international education conference.
