Participants in this session will learn how to connect primary sources, historic places and digital resources in an interactive set of inquiry activities launched in the GooseChase scavenger hunt application.
Participants will utilize digitized primary sources from the Library of Congress, focusing on historical documents, maps, and photographs related to Denver's history and connect these in live time to historic places in Denver in the lower Downtown and Golden Triangle area of Denver.
Participants will employ the GooseChase app to engage in an interactive scavenger hunt that incorporate primary source analysis and historical inquiry and learn how the activities they are experiencing can be transferred to classroom and field use for students or participants in a school, community group or museums.
The session will use a Blended Learning Model to use both digital and print resources in an interactive session which showcases how primary sources can be used inside and outside of the classroom with GooseChase.
Participants will engage in the use of GooseChase missions that take them to historic sites in Denver and connect them with primary sources to explore the diverse rich history of Denver while analyzing and synthesizing collections of primary sources that showcase the Latino, LGBTQ+, African American, Asian American and Native American history of Denver.
Participants will understand how this tool and the development of these strategies integrate primary sources related to these sites as clues.
Encourage students to analyze and synthesize information from these sources to complete missions.
Participants will use and evaluate Project Zero Visible Thinking Routines to encourage critical thinking and inquiry in their session and explore how other educators have used this tool in their classroom through case studies presented during the session stops on the hunt.
In summary, the integration of primary sources, the GooseChase application, historic places, inquiry-based learning, Project Zero strategies, and Library of Congress resources has transformed the learning experience for students that have collaborated with this team. It has boosted engagement, fostered critical thinking, and deepened their understanding of Denver's history, all while leveraging technology in innovative ways. This team is prepared to share this experience with participants of ISTE 2024.
Presenters will introduce the concept of place based learning to participants at the beginning of the interactive session and provide connections to primary sources. They will give a simple overview on how to use the application and the types of critical thinking and strategy-based questions that are in the program. Participants will use theirs own device or collaborate in teams to access the GooseChase software application.
Embedded in the application are research-based strategies for each activity in the online place-based interactive scavenger hunt that will allow participants to explore the Golden Triangle of Denver adjacent to the Colorado Convention Center in a safe interactive setting. Participants will be exploring STEM, BIPOC, and LGBTQ components of the historic LODO and Golden Triangle area surrounding the conference . Team members will be located at different locations during the activity to provide hands on use of primary sources and assist with critical thinking and analysis activities based on structures from Project Zero and the Library of Congress.
At the conclusion of the session participants will return to the convention center for a discussion of the strategies employed in the game, how this can be implemented with students in a field based setting or in the classroom, and how research-based pedagogy supports this type of learning inside and outside the classroom.
Participants will win prizes (Printed primary sources and other Denver based items such as books and souvenirs from historic places in Denver and History Colorado) Of course, bragging rights as winners is always acceptable! Photos and quotes from the activity will be shared on social media for the benefit of other ISTE participants and the game will be shared for future use by others.
