Charell Milton is an Instructional Technology Specialist in Atlanta, GA and holds a Masters degree in Educational Technology from California State University. Charell has worked in education in the United States and internationally for over 13 years. She has spent time working with elementary and middle school students developing their voice and working collaboratively with staff. Charell has served as a mentor, grade-level lead and instructional coach for new and veteran teachers. With a passion for integrating social emotional learning and authentically integrating technology, Charell seeks to aid in providing equitable and engaging access to education for all learners.

Session description

Learn practical insights to kickstart video production projects effortlessly. Discover how an instructional technology specialist collaborated with teachers to help students create engaging social studies content utilizing tools like green screens, iMovie, and Canva. Gain a fundamental understanding of the video production process which fosters creativity, teamwork and critical thinking.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this session is to share with participants who want to explore the basics of video production with their elementary students. They will learn the introductory process of video production, including storyboarding, filming, and editing. As well as next steps, tips on incorporating visual effects and graphics using media tools like green screens, iMovie, and Canva. Throughout the session, participants can brainstorm project ideas, collaborate with peers, and receive guidance from the instructor. By the end of the workshop, teachers will leave with best practices for using video production as a teaching tool to engage and inspire their students while building essential skills such as creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.

Outline

Activities will include: Presenter introductions (5 min), overview of the social studies technology integration project (10 minutes), overview of apps used and basic skills needed (15 minutes), breakdown of video production process (15 min), samples of student projects (20 minutes), Q & A (10-15 min). The remainder of time will be used for participants to outline how they could apply video production projects in their classrooms with presenter supporting and answering questions, and ending with time to share ideas (10 min).
