Abid has been working in schools & EdTech for over 20 years. As the IT Director for the Newham Community Learning, he leads on the digital transformation, digital strategy and delivery of all technology related learning experiences for the Trust.

Abid has presented and spoken at many conferences and events globally. In recognition of his efforts in helping to improve digital outcomes for learners, he was awarded the title of EduFuturists Network Manager of the Year 2020 and also named in the 2020 EdTech50 “Ones to Note”.

Session description

The session will aim to highlight the dangers and the sometimes uncomfortable changes schools need to address and make, to ensure that their vital systems and data are as secure as possible for an ever evolving cyber crime threat landscape.

Purpose & objective

Purpose and Objectives:
Purpose: The purpose of this presentation is to equip education professionals and IT leaders with the knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary to enhance cyber security within educational institutions. We aim to address the growing threats and challenges in the digital learning environment, ensuring that schools can provide a safe and secure online experience for students and staff.

Objectives and Participant Outcomes:
Upon participating in this presentation, attendees will:

Understand the Educational Challenge: Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the specific cyber security challenges and threats facing educational institutions today. This will include insights into the increasing frequency of cyberattacks on schools, the potential consequences for students and staff, and the regulatory landscape governing data protection in education.

Master Cyber Security Strategies: Attendees will learn a range of effective cyber security strategies and best practices tailored to educational environments. These strategies will cover areas such as network security, data protection, threat detection, and incident response.

Technology Intervention: We will introduce participants to a selection of technology interventions and tools that are essential for bolstering cyber security in education. These may include widely-known solutions like firewalls, antivirus software, and intrusion detection systems, as well as specialized tools designed for educational settings.

We will also discuss effective communication strategies for educating students and staff about cyber threats and safety.

Evidence of Success: Throughout the presentation, we will share success stories and examples of educational institutions that have successfully implemented cyber security measures. These examples will include measurable improvements in data security, incident response effectiveness, and overall cyber resilience.

By the end of the session, participants will have the knowledge and tools needed to assess their institution's cyber security readiness, develop an action plan for improvement, and create a safer online learning environment for students and staff.
