Dr. Keisha Chandler is an experienced education expert, currently serving as Senior Director of Partner Success at ASCD. With a Doctor of Education from Northeastern University and a Master of Science in training and organizational development, she has taught K-12 in urban school districts across the US. Keisha is a 2021-2022 DC Education Policy Fellow with the Institute of Educational Leadership and an adjunct professor at Trinity Washington University. She has also published works in the Journal for Research on African-American Women and the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses database.

Bryan Goodwin is President and CEO of McREL International, a nonprofit that helps educators worldwide apply the science of teaching, learning and leading to lift all learners. He has written many books that translate research into practice, including The New Classroom Instruction that Works: The Best Research-based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement (ASCD, 2022), Learning that Sticks: A Brain-Based Model for K-12 Instructional Design and Delivery (ASCD, 2020); and Simply Better: Doing What Matters Most to Change the Odds for Student Success (ASCD, 2011). He also writes a regular research column for ASCD’s monthly Educational Leadership magazine.

Dr. Jeremy S. Owoh began his career in 2003 as an English teacher at Parkview Magnet High School in the Little Rock School District. In 2017, Dr. Owoh was named the Assistant Commissioner of Educator Effectiveness and Licensure and was later appointed as the Superintendent of Schools for the Pine Bluff School District. Currently, Dr. Owoh serves as the Superintendent for the Jacksonville North Pulaski School District. Dr. Owoh serves on the ASCD/ISTE Board of Directors as President-elect.

Anthony Rebora is the Chief Content Officer for ISTE-ASCD. Previously, he was the editor in chief of Educational Leadership, ASCD's flagship magazine, and led content development for the association's fast-evolving digital outlets. Under his leadership, Educational Leadership won numerous awards for editorial excellence, increased the breadth of its coverage and contributors, and expanded its online reach. He was formerly a managing editor at Education Week, where he oversaw coverage of teaching and teaching policy. As an editor, his foremost goals are to elevate educator voice and raise awareness of critical issues and solutions in education.

Chief Innovation Officer
Joseph South is a national educational technology leader focused on evidence-based learning transformation. He presently serves as the chief innovation officer at ISTE + ASCD. He formerly served as director of the Office of Educational Technology at the U.S. Department of Education. He advised the Secretary of Education, developed national educational technology policy, formed public-private partnerships to assist state and local education leaders in transitioning to digital learning, helped school districts expand the use of openly licensed educational resources (OERs), and collaborated to nurture a robust ecosystem of edtech entrepreneurs and innovators.

Session description

This year, ISTE+ASCD is unveiling the Principles for Transformational Learning, a set of evidence-based guidelines to help educators increase amazing and impactful learning experiences for all students. Be among the first to get an in-depth look at this groundbreaking framework! This session will include an introduction to the Principles and their grounding in learning science and ISTE+ASCD’s legacy and mission; reflective and interactive activities to help participants explore the power of transformational learning experiences; and insights from a panel of instructional experts on how the Principles can shape learning cultures and practices in schools.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this session is to introduce and socialize the new ISTE-ASCD Principles for Transformational Learning to key audience of engaged ISTE stakeholders. Participants will come away with an in-depth, understanding of the Principles and gain actionable knowledge and insights on using the principles to create and support amazing and impactful learning experiences in their own schools and classrooms. The also hope they will see the potentials connections between this uses of this framework and system-wide efforts to improve student learning experiences at scale.

Outline

This session will include an introductory presentation on the Principles for Transformational Learning (15 minutes); reflective & interactive activities to help attendees interiorize the elements of transformational learning (20 minutes); and panel discussion Q&A to designed to give attendees insights on how the Principles could help shape learning in their schools (25 minutes).

The Principles for Transformational Learning are grounded in learning science and informed by ISTE and ASCD's well-regarded resources and frameworks. They Principles went through an extensive review process, with feedback provided by external instructional experts and scholars.
