Session description
Two 6th grade girls, Cooper Boggess and Ava Hollie attended a Coding Camp sponsored by Apple. The girls learned about coding using Playground, Keynote, and Freeform. They had to develop an app concept that would help their school or community and deliver a 3-minute pitch. “Calm-It” was designed to help middle/high students with reducing anxiety and promoting positive social/emotional learning. They won 1st place in the Giles County competition and were named the regional winners at the Southwest Virginia Can Code Pitchfest at UVA Wise. They have a “Calm-It’ Facebook page to increase their following beyond Virginia. These girls have presented at the Appalachian Technology and Innovation Gala, VTSE Conference, and were the featured speakers on the VTSE Webinar/Podcast Series. They have also presented for their entire school, the educational feature for Giles County School Board , and the Giles County Board of Supervisors.
Additional Information
The Giles County School Division has been gracious to support these girls from the very beginning. They have agreed to take on the majority of the cost to get us to Denver in June. They would love to see these two chosen to present and believe they have a very empowering message to share.
