Dr. Kim Walter when not working loves the outdoors including hiking, mountain biking, camping and gardening. When working as a librarian I strive to keep up with new technology tools and the students help me do just that. I am always working to learn new things and have a doctorate in educational innovation and leadership with a research focus in problem-based learning. I taught art, English, technology and history in Australia, Taiwan, Colorado and Wisconsin.

Session description

Colorado Public Radio (CPR) features one minute snippets of interesting Colorado history. We partnered with CPR to record the student created postcards for the program. We will share this lesson and provide ideas for how we work with the community to connect standards to real world problems through PBL.

Purpose & objective

Our goal with the presentation is to help others make connections in their building and community to create learning experiences the students will remember for a long time. We will provide a lesson with resources and examples of technology tools, scaffolds and a model for others to do this work as well. We used Adobe Express and Google Docs for students to conduct research, write, and rewrite to fit specifications. Students published through a video format with music, recording and an image to support their research. We show the student process, examples of student work throughout and final products. We will also demonstrate how we used John Spencer's launch cycle and lesson plan templates to plan and how to contact community members. Attendees should leave with actionable steps to start this work on their own. We know we are successful when our students ask to do this work when not doing PBLs. One hundred percent of our students complete all aspects of the work and even take homework home when not asked to do their best work. Students are still talking about the PBL today, when we started in November. Evaluations from students request this type of work for more assignments, all students can name what they did well and what they will improve for next time.
