Session description

Unlock the power of Kami + AI to transform your assessment practices! This session will explore how Kami's versatile tools can streamline formative and summative assessments, foster meaningful feedback, and harness data for timely interventions.

Purpose & objective

Formative assessment is the foundation for teaching and learning. It is what teachers use to clarify student understanding and misunderstanding vis a vis learning objectives. It is what students use to understand their own thinking and progress – essential to the learning process. However, some of the key challenges with formative assessment, or any assessment, is creating high quality, valid items, grading, and reporting. Our presentation will show how Kami Questions AI solves these teaching challenges, thereby offering far greater instructional efficiency and deeper use of formative assessment for learning.

Supporting research

1. Black and Wiliam (1998): This foundational study, "Inside the Black Box: Raising Standards Through Classroom Assessment," emphasizes that formative assessment significantly enhances student learning. The researchers found that effective formative assessment practices lead to substantial learning gains, particularly for low-achieving students, by providing continuous feedback and promoting self-regulation in learning (McKinsey & Company).

2. National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) (2000): The NCTM’s Principles and Standards for School Mathematics outlines the critical role of formative assessment in improving mathematics instruction. The study highlights how formative assessments help teachers identify student misunderstandings, monitor progress, and adjust instruction accordingly. It underscores that regular, formative assessments are essential for informed instructional decisions and enhancing student learning outcomes (Devlin Peck - Instructional Designer).

3. Heritage, Kim, Vendlinski, and Herman (2009): Their study, "From Evidence to Action: A Seamless Process in Formative Assessment?" published in Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, discusses the seamless integration of formative assessment into daily classroom activities. The researchers argue that formative assessments provide actionable insights into student learning, helping educators tailor instruction to meet diverse student needs and fostering a more personalized learning environment. This integration is shown to improve both teaching practices and student achievement (Pew Research Center).
