The spark of an idea at an Education in Games conference incited the creation of a storyline that continues to evolve more than 2 decades after its inception. That journey has inspired outcomes, student and educator reactions, well beyond anything envisaged at the outset. Endlessly curious, Ian seeks to further develop the potential of multimodal 'born-digital' reading and creativity experiences meaningful for today's students.

Session description

The multimodal narrative Inanimate Alice discusses life growing up in the 21st century. Laced with problems to be overcome, Alice’s adventures provide opportunities to discuss topics such as loneliness, family crises and peer pressure. The producer will share educators’ experiences highlighting teaching moments that provoke classroom discussion and student creativity.

Purpose & objective

I'll be reviewing Inanimate Alice, an ISTE Sealholder, from an SEL perspective. The materials produced are authentic to today's students and are presented in such a way as to extend the core storyline into branching adventures encouraging student participation and contribution.

Inanimate Alice has reached a broad audience of early-adopting teachers across North America and around the world. Success is evidenced by case studies from the website and the rich research supporting it with c. 750 citations noted on Google Scholar.
