Session description

Coaching roles are expanding nationwide, and most states still lack official credentials. This session explores how organizations like Forward Edge and VSTE are partnering to build meaningful, standards-aligned certification programs. Learn how these efforts support professional growth, system-wide alignment, and stronger outcomes for coaches, schools, and students.

Outline

(5 minutes) Welcome & Framing the Challenge
Content: Introduce presenters and session goals.
Engagement: Quick audience poll: “How does your state or school district prepare or credential coaches (instructional, edtech, reading, etc.)?”
Purpose: Establish shared awareness of the lack of formal pathways—and the range of approaches that may exist.

(10 minutes) The Problem: Coaching Without a Path
Content:
- Outline national context: coaching roles are expanding, but formal certification is inconsistent or nonexistent.
- Discuss implications for coach identity, hiring, evaluation, and equity.
Engagement: Think-pair-share: “How does your state or school district define the role of a coach?”

(15 minutes) Case Study: Certification in Action
Content:
- Present how Forward Edge partnered with VSTE and other state organizations to co-design certification programs.
- Share goals, structure, alignment to standards, and participant feedback.
Engagement: Visual walk-through of the certification framework and components.

(15 minutes) Scaling the Work: Lessons Across States
Content:
- Highlight how other states and organizations are building similar pathways.
- Discuss what makes certification meaningful—not just another checkbox.
Engagement: Group reflection: “What would a meaningful certification look like in your state?”

(10 minutes) Planning & Action
Content:
- Offer guiding questions for advocacy or program design.
- Share tools and frameworks to bring back to schools or state organizations.
Engagement: Participants draft one next step for either:
Advocating for certification in their context
Improving an existing program
Partnering with a state or organization

(5 minutes) Wrap-Up & Resource Share
Content:
- Summarize key takeaways and encourage continued collaboration.
- Share access to planning tools, certification sample documents, and contact info.
Engagement: Exit prompt: “What’s one insight or action you’re taking with you?”
