Event Information
The session will be structured around a rapid-fire breakdown of "5 Core Competencies":
1. AI vs. Human: It's a tool, not a sentient being.
2. The Big Ideas: Introduction to a core concept like "Representation and Reasoning" (from the AI4K12 framework) and its link to learning.
3. Critical analysis: Applying a "Investigate, Pay Attention, Observe" framework to vet AI outputs. 4. Prompting: essential elements for an effective instructional prompt.
5. Ethical Guardrails: Highlighting the immediate need for conversations on bias and privacy in student work.
The process is:
1. Hook: A powerful example of AI's current impact on education.
2. Core 5: Rapid-fire presentation of the five concepts
3. Actionable Takeaway: Teachers will receive a checklist and a one-page resource of supporting research.
After this session, participants will be able to:
1. Differentiate between the various functions of AI tools (e.g., generative vs. predictive) to better understand their limitations.
2. Investigate AI-generated content to identify potential biases or inaccuracies.
3. Develop high-impact prompts that transform an AI tool from a simple output generator into a thought partner for instructional design or student feedback.
4. Identify key ethical and safety considerations to guide responsible student use of AI in the classroom.
