Session description

Witness the transformation of third-grade students into budding astronomers, engineers, and scientists through a guided journey of space exploration. We will share the excitement of using hands-on methods to build model rockets and bring the solar system to life in the classroom.

Outline

Galaxy Creation Lab: Craft a swirling galaxy using simple, low-cost materials to learn how abstract scientific concepts can be transformed into tangible, artistic creations.

Digital Escape Room (10 minutes): Collaborate with peers to solve space-themed puzzles in a digital escape room built with Gemini canvas (https://g.co/gemini/share/fd64edc80983), demonstrating a powerful strategy for gamifying content review.

Rocket Design Challenge (10 minutes): Step into the role of an engineer in a rapid prototyping activity where you'll build and test a model rocket, simulating the core of the project's design process.

VR Solar System Tour: Embark on an immersive journey through the cosmos using accessible VR apps such as stellarium, star chart, solar walk and star and planets on your own smartphone, showcasing how to integrate cutting-edge technology on a budget.

Outcomes

This session empowers educators to move beyond theory and into practice. You will walk away with a complete blueprint for an interdisciplinary space exploration STEM unit that you can adapt and implement immediately. Through a hands-on building activity, you will experience the engineering design process firsthand and leave with a model to jumpstart the project in your own classroom. We will focus on practical strategies for embedding authentic data collection and analysis into science, making math meaningful for students. Finally, you will discover how to use technology to amplify learning, connecting your class with real-world experts and deepen learning to the possibility of becoming a new generation of NASA astronauts.
