Session description

Beyond "30-day fluency" gimmicks, what does real language mastery take? This session shares a Japanese innovator's journey and a practical framework focused on deep comprehension, not just scripts. Leave with a research-backed, tech-infused roadmap to conquer your own ambitious professional learning challenges.

Outline

Introduction: The Spark (5 mins): The presenter shares their personal, vulnerable story of presenting at ISTE '25 with A2 English, creating an immediate, authentic connection. Engagement: Quick poll (e.g., Mentimeter) asking, "Have you ever felt a professional goal was 'impossible'?"

Part 1: The Engine - Mindset & Motivation (10 mins): A brief, powerful overview of Carol Dweck's Growth Mindset and its critical role in adult learning.

Engagement: Think-Pair-Share activity where attendees discuss a past learning challenge and reframe it with a "growth" perspective.

Part 2: The Framework - A Roadmap for Mastery (20 mins): The core of the session. The presenter first debunks common "quick fluency" myths, which often only teach situational scripts (e.g., ordering coffee). Instead, this session introduces a method for developing authentic communicative competence by focusing on two core pillars: speech recognition and meaning comprehension. The presenter then unveils their 4-step, research-backed framework built on these pillars: (1) Goal Setting, (2) Strategy Selection (integrating Krashen's theories ), (3) Tech-Enhanced Execution , (4) Reflective Evaluation.

Engagement: Live demo of 2-3 key tech tools that specifically target speech recognition and comprehension.

Part 3: Your Turn - Draft Your Journey (15 mins): A hands-on, device-based workshop. Attendees use a provided digital template to begin outlining their own self-directed learning plan for a personal professional goal.

Conclusion & Q&A (10 mins): Recap of the framework, a powerful call to action, and open Q&A. A QR code links to all resources.
