Artificial intelligence (AI) is not only shaping education, but also transforming many of the things we do. This comprehensive workshop will take you through a historical and foundational understanding of artificial intelligence, while centering the conversation in the broader context of reinventing learning. We’ll spotlight various facets of AI, such as generative AI, large language models, and image generators, and consider the benefits and potential risks. We’ll explore how AI is influencing instructional design, personalized learning, assessment methods, the skills students need for success, and many administrative tasks. You’ll gain a clearer understanding of how AI is shaping the future of education and be equipped with valuable insights to navigate this rapidly evolving landscape. We’ll engage in a variety of interactive activities, including hands-on exercises, small-group/large-group discussions, and collaborative exploration of shared resources.

Ken Shelton has been an educator for over 20 years, many of which were spent teaching technology to middle school students. He has also worked extensively at the policy level with a number of state departments of education, ministries of education, and nonprofits. Shelton is a frequent keynote speaker, and consults and leads workshops on edtech, equity and inclusion, anti-racism, multimedia literacy, cultural intelligence, and instructional design. He’s an Apple Distinguished Educator, a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert, and a Google Certified Innovator. He’s been awarded ISTE’s Digital Equity PLN Excellence Award and was named an “influencer to follow” by EdTech Magazine.
Tara Nattrass, Ed.D., is the managing director of innovation strategy for ASCD+ISTE where she collaborates with educators to reinvent learning, focusing on innovative programs and learning models, professional learning, emerging technologies, and cybersecurity. She has been actively supporting educators in navigating the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), including serving on Al task forces and the steering committee of Teach Al. Prior to joining the ISTE + ASCD team, Nattrass served as a chief education innovation strategist at Dell Technologies. She also spent 20+ years serving in districts in a variety of teaching and leadership roles. Nattrass holds a doctorate in K-12 educational leadership and policy from Vanderbilt University.
