Every Student’s Success: Engagement Strategies for Each Child

In every classroom, there are students who feel disconnection and dislocation, despite the teacher’s best efforts. Spend a day learning a relational skill set and constructing intentional child-specific strategies that engage all students, especially those farthest from the experience we want them to have. Concepts and strategies are based on Alexs Pate’s book The Innocent Classroom.

Audience:

This session is appropriate for teachers, staff, and administrators committed to developing authentic, intentional relationships with all students, creating classrooms where children are free of negative expectations or stereotyped expectations.

Participants will:

  • Learn how stereotype threat and implicit bias are barriers to success for many children.

  • Develop strategies for understanding the sources of each child’s disconnection from education and opportunities for increased engagement.

  • Apply your learning to develop relational strategies for each child based on their motivation.
