Event Information
Teaching is both a science and an art. On the science side, there is considerable evidence that educators can use to make informed instructional decisions. We ignore that evidence to our, and our students’, peril. In addition to the science of teaching, there are aspects that are more appropriately called an art. The art of teaching involves healthy teacher-student relationships, the learning climate that is created, the teachers’ passion for students and their learning, and more.
A strong, research-based framework of instruction is necessary to support high-expectations teaching so that the science and the art of teaching merge. In this session you’ll learn about the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) instructional framework and discover why it’s crucial for moving all students toward independence.
Audience:
This session is appropriate for teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, and curriculum directors and coordinators interested in supporting all students, including those with disabilities, and multilingual learners.
Participants will:
Deepen their understanding of the quality indicators in each phase of instruction.
Examine how high-expectations teaching is manifested in each of these phases.
Identify how evidence is gathered in each phase in order to advance learning.
Distinguish between rigor versus the illusion of student learning.
Nancy Frey, Ph.D., is a professor of literacy in educational leadership at San Diego State University, where she focuses on policies and practices in literacy and school leadership. Staying true to her belief that it is critical to remain deeply embedded in the life of a school, she also teaches at Health Sciences High and Middle College, an award-winning open-enrollment public school in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego, which she co-founded with Ian Pumpian and Doug Fisher.
The ASCD book Better Learning Through Structured Teaching: A Framework for the Gradual Release of Responsibility, 3rd Edition is included in your registration and will be distributed at the workshop.
