Event Information
This session will present Lotería a 68 Voices, a project where students design a digital version of the traditional Mexican Lotería to preserve Indigenous languages through Augmented Reality (AR) and audio. The session begins by contextualizing the loss of Indigenous languages and the educational opportunity to address it through technology. Attendees will engage in a live demonstration of AR-enhanced cards, experience authentic pronunciations, and explore how to guide students through the design and production process using accessible tools.
Time Allocation:
0–10 min: Introduction to the problem and project goals; cultural and educational context.
10–25 min: Step-by-step overview of how students researched, designed, and created AR and audio elements.
25–40 min: Hands-on demonstration; participants use their own devices to scan sample cards and hear pronunciations.
40–55 min: Collaborative discussion and idea exchange: how to replicate or adapt the model for other subjects or languages.
55–60 min: Reflection and Q&A on integrating cultural identity and technology for inclusive learning.
Process and Engagement Strategies:
Audience engagement will occur throughout via interactive demonstrations, short polls, and guided discussion prompts. Participants will collaborate in small groups to brainstorm applications for their classrooms. Device-based interaction with AR samples will allow attendees to experience the same creative process as students, fostering curiosity, empathy, and cultural awareness.
Lotería a 68 Voices is an innovative educational project that integrates culture, technology, and student creativity to preserve Mexico’s Indigenous languages. Through the design of digital Lotería cards enhanced with Augmented Reality and audio of authentic pronunciations, students connect language, art, and technology in a meaningful way. The session will demonstrate how educators can implement this project to promote inclusion, linguistic awareness, and creative expression. Participants will leave with practical strategies to guide students in designing culturally relevant, technology-rich learning experiences that can be replicated in any classroom to foster identity, empathy, and 21st-century skills.
