After teaching HS Math and Computer Science for 25 years, I switched roles to become a K-12 Ed Tech Specialist, with a goal to help integrate computer science and technology into all classes. Coaching my son’s Lego Robotics Team 10 years ago led me to start integrating coding and robotics into my math classes. I have presented for AMTNYS, NYSCATE and regional NYS Conferences on using technology and CS in the classroom. I am an IRobot Ambassador and our HS VEX Robotics coach, and accomplished a goal last summer earning my part 107 Remote UAS Pilot Certificate for professionally flying drones.

Session description

Search & rescue missions and collecting data are lessons with drones created to inspire our students to learn. See how these lessons as well as coding the Mars Rover path and Mandalas with iRobot Root are engaging students at Glens Falls City Schools. Participants can earn TRUST certification for flying drones.

Purpose & objective

This presentation will provide participants with an understanding of the impact unmanned aerial vehicles and robotics have on education and the ways these technologies are revolutionizing students’ learning experiences, enhancing engagement and preparing them for the future.

Participant outcomes include:

Understand the potential benefits of integrating drones and robotics into various learning environments and disciplines.
Explore creative ways to integrate these technologies into lessons to engage students.
Recognize how teamwork and problem-solving skills can be developed through the use of drones and robotics.
Have an opportunity to earn TRUST certificate for flying drones recreationally.

Throughout the session, I will share examples of lessons I have used in classes from K-12 using the IRobot Root Robot using graphical, block and python coding with themes as storytelling, sequencing, art, science and math. Also included will be lessons using drones at middle and high school levels, learning about the physics of flights, coding flight with simulators, modeling search and rescue scenarios, constructing simple drones, researching career paths and earning TRUST certificates for recreational flying.

Outline

This presentation will start by conveying the importance of the integration of computer science standards across disciplines for our students. Future related career opportunities related to drones and robotics shared with students will be discussed. The presentation will continue with IRobot Root robot lesson demonstrations in art, science and storytelling. Images and videos of student work will be shown. IRobot Coding app simulator will be shared with participants, with an opportunity for them to try out the simulator at all three levels of coding. Time will be allotted for participants to sync code they have created with a Root robot. The session will move into drone lessons created for middle and high school students, including images and videos. Projects used with Droneblocks simulator will be demonstrated and shared. Participants will then be allowed to try out the Droneblocks simulator on their own devices. Drone flight with Databots will be demonstrated, with realtime data collection. Images and videos of multiple levels of students participating in drone lessons will be shared. To finish off the session participants will have the opportunity to participate and earn their TRUST certification for flying drones recreationally, which our 5th graders have completed.
