Purpose & objective

Inquiry and research are invaluable skills for students to practice, not only for their academic development but also for authentic engagement in the learning process. Student-driven learning can take many forms across grade levels. In this session, we will share specific student examples, resources, methods of implementation, and other learnings from technology-driven inquiry processes.

Beginning at the elementary level, 5th-grade students engage in a year-long passion project called “Ig-Knight.” This personal inquiry is prompted by teachers but driven by the students. This capstone project has given our students the unique opportunity to dive deeper into an area of their own interest in order to ignite interest in their peers.

In middle school, students are given opportunities to staff, write, and produce their own live news show, in a weekly live broadcast Students both imagine what the show could be and learn the technical skills that are required to make that vision come to life.

In upper school, students are given the opportunity to grow in a self-paced technology elective called Tech Force. Tech Force allows students to provide entry-level tech support to students and staff while developing their technology fluency through training provided by Google and Apple. These trainings include Apple Teacher training, which improves productivity with Apple products, and Google Educator Level 1 training, which helps students provide peers and teachers alike with feedback on managing their Google Education accounts.

Students across all grade levels participate in "Knight Tank," a collaborative project inviting students to propose an innovative concept that would enhance the student experience. Students present to a review board including school trustees, the Head of School, and members of the senior staff. School funding has been set aside for selected proposals.
