Session description

Implement a Making for Good class or program! Students learn a variety of design processes/making skills, think critically/ creatively, problem solve, and design/create hands-on projects. Students then apply what they have learned to a project centered around solving a problem related to the United Nations’ SDGs.

Purpose & objective

Participants will be able to implement a Making for Good class or program in their classroom or school library. Information will also be provided on proposing the implementation of the class or program to administration.
Students that participate in the class or program will acquire a variety of maker skills dependent upon the resources / technology available at their school. I teach a wide variety of tools/processes that include Makey Makey, paper circuits, Tinkercad, Micro:Bit, Edison Robots, Adafruit Circuit Playground Express, cardboard construction, 3Doodler, Scratch, MakeCode, Code.org, Vex EXP, Legos, and miscellaneous maker materials including dollar store materials. They also learn about the UN's SDGs and use the skills they learn to attempt to solve a real world problem related to the SDGs also known as the Global Goals.
I employ a Maker Badging system that students use to acquire maker skills that are not directly taught to the entire class on Maker Badge Fridays.
My students have produced a variety of projects aimed at solving problems that they chose to address. The projects produced range from an interactive display about the dangers of ocean plastic to prototypes of robots that could deliver food ton those in need on demand to the development of a tool that assisted students in need of focus while reading. All students used voice and choice throughout the implementation of their final projects.
The majority of students entered the class with minimal maker skills and departed the class as true makers with confidence in their ability to solve problems through the use of critical thinking, creativity, a maker mindset, and their maker skills.
