Amanda Long is a middle school educator from Whitby, Ontario, Canada, near Toronto. She currently teaches Grade 7 and Grade 8 Gifted Education. She has presented across Canada to educational leaders on a variety of topics related to student engagement, instructional strategies and authentic assessment practices. Amanda has her Masters in Educational Leadership from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. She continues to incorporate social justice, STEAM and leadership initiatives into her classroom regularly.

Session description

Explore how global citizenship, SDGs and access to safe water can be integrated into your learning space through cross-curricular learning with Makedo cardboard construction tools and the Makedo Change program. Learn strategies to empower students to become changemakers while developing their SEL, critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving in meaningful, fun and engaging ways.

Purpose & objective

Purpose is to showcase how hands-on learning opportunities to bring to your classroom, library, school or district to engage students in experiential learning that allows students to plan, build, test and reflect on their engineer design process. The presenter will show how use of the Makedo cardboard construction tool kit created rich, meaningful learning opportunities for her own classroom and school and ways to use it to promote activism and global citizenship.

Outline

Presenter will share experiences with the Makedo Change Program and Makedo cardboard construction kit including images and stories from her classroom experiences (15-30 minutes). Participants engage in a hands-on building challenge to demonstrate the materials and program (15 minutes) then allow for exploration and discussion around ways the program and materials could be utilized in their learning spaces (15 minutes)
