Session description

Fostering Digital Citizenship/Media Literacy, alongside Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), is vital. This session integrates the "Big 3" principles aligned with ISTE standards. It goes beyond one-time lessons, integrating Digital Citizenship/Media Literacy with SEL for a comprehensive approach. Attendees will receive implementation resources for immediate use with students.

Purpose & objective

This presentation aims to empower educators with the knowledge and tools needed to create a holistic and inclusive approach to Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy education, aligning with ISTE and CASEL standards. It addresses the challenge of fostering responsible digital behavior and emotional intelligence in an increasingly digital world.

Upon completion of this presentation, participants will:

1. Comprehend the interplay between Digital Citizenship, Media Literacy, and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) within the educational context.

2. Be able to utilize the ISTE Standards for Students (Digital Citizen 2a-2d) and ISTE Standards for Educators (Citizen 3a-3d) as a framework for comprehensive Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy education.

3. Implement SEL principles from CASEL to foster emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills in students alongside digital citizenship.

4. Harness educational technology tools to facilitate engaging and interactive Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy lessons.

5. Develop strategies for assessing the impact of Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy education, including tracking improvements in students' digital behavior and emotional well-being.

The challenge addressed is the evolving digital landscape where students are exposed to an abundance of online information, often without proper guidance. Ensuring that students become responsible digital citizens while also nurturing their social-emotional development is essential.

This session incorporates widely available technology tools, such as learning management systems, digital storytelling platforms, and interactive educational apps, to demonstrate how digital literacy and emotional intelligence can be effectively integrated into the curriculum.

This session employs a blended learning model, combining synchronous presentations with asynchronous activities. This allows participants to engage actively during the session and practice the concepts afterward.

Instructional Activities/Strategies:
-Participants analyze real-world case studies where digital citizenship and media literacy are critical.
-Participant activities will be utilized to explore SEL concepts and apply them to student learning scenarios.
- Providing templates and guidelines for designing inclusive Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy curriculum.
- Demonstrations of digital tools and resources to enhance teaching and learning.

Success is measured through participant feedback, with a focus on improvements in participants' knowledge and skills in integrating Digital Citizenship, Media Literacy, and SEL into their teaching practices. Additionally, attendees will be encouraged to share their experiences and outcomes after implementing these strategies in their classrooms, fostering a collaborative community of educators dedicated to promoting digital responsibility and emotional well-being among students.
