Dr. Monique M. Chism is the visionary Under Secretary for Education at the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex. In this pivotal role, she sets the institution's educational strategy and leads the effort to connect America's classrooms with the Smithsonian's unparalleled resources, spanning 21 museums, 9 research facilities, 6 education centers, and the National Zoo. Collaborating with over 300 educators, she champions making the Smithsonian's vast collections and expertise accessible to learners nationwide.

A transformative leader with a distinguished career in education, Dr. Chism brings deep knowledge and expertise shaped by her interdisciplinary background in history, sociology, and education. This unique perspective allows her to emphasize the intersection of ideas and approaches, fostering collaboration and driving meaningful change. Her experience as a teacher, state education administrator, and federal policymaker provides a nuanced understanding of the educational landscape.

Prior to her 2021 appointment at the Smithsonian, Dr. Chism served as Vice President for Education Policy and Strategic Initiatives at the American Institutes for Research, where she led teams translating social science research into effective policy and practice. From 2013-2018, she held a Senior Executive Service position at the U.S. Department of Education as Deputy Assistant Secretary, advising the Secretary of Education and the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education. In this capacity, she managed a $22 billion grant portfolio and directed six program offices, playing a critical role in shaping national pre-K-12 education policy. Earlier, as Assistant Superintendent for Innovation and Improvement at the Illinois State Board of Education, she significantly contributed to the Illinois statewide system of support.

Dr. Chism holds degrees from Ohio University (BA), Central Michigan University (MA), and Michigan State University (doctorate). Her diverse talents are further highlighted by her early education at the School for the Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, where she majored in dance and theater.
