Session description

Well-being can’t be satisfied by Wellness Wednesdays alone. It must be integral, immutable, and fundamental to a school's culture. This is where Wise Freedom comes in. Wise Freedom is about affording students the autonomy to explore and grow while being supported by a framework of accountability and community norms.

Outline

Introduction and Overview (5 minutes)
 • Introduce the concept of “Wise Freedom.”

Understanding Wise Freedom (10 minutes)
 • Define Wise Freedom.
 • Explain its importance.
 • Discuss balancing autonomy with community responsibility.
 • Share classroom vignettes and first-hand accounts from teachers and students.

Challenges and Opportunities (10 minutes)
 • Facilitate an interactive discussion.
 • Encourage sharing of experiences and thoughts on student autonomy across divisions and age groups
 • Discuss and excavate common challenges.
 • Address specific concerns and ideas in a Q&A session.

Group Activity: Implementing Wise Freedom (15 minutes)
 • Divide attendees into small groups for case study discussions.

Individual Exercise: Implementing Wise Freedom (15 minutes)
 • Provide templates and tools for attendees to use to draft a provisional plan for adopting elements of Wise Freedom in their school.
 • Allow attendees to brainstorm and outline next steps.

Closing Remarks and Next Steps (5 minutes)
 • Recap key points.
 • Provide a call to action.
