Session description

Schools underutilize three community entities within the Black American community: the Black Church, salons and barbershops, and the Divine Nine. This session will provide a conceptual model for schools to assist students through data and SMART goals, bolster student success, and close the achievement, attainment, and opportunity gaps.

Outline

Content: Pain points for educators; Overview of Black Americans' need for community; overview of the Village Model of Community Engagement and its components; overview of Cultural Wealth theory and Multi-tiered systems of Support; discussion of the importance of the Black Church, salons/barbershops, and the Divine Nine; overview of data collection and analysis

Engagement: The audience will be encouraged to interject when they see fit; a roll call of Divine Nine members in attendance

Time: 15 mins - Pain points for educators; Overview of Black Americans' need for community; overview of the Village Model of Community Engagement and its components

10 mins - overview of Cultural Wealth theory and Multi-tiered systems of Support

20 mins - discussion of the importance of the Black Church, salons/barbershops, and the Divine Nine

10 mins - overview of data collection and analysis

Process: At a specific point in the presentation, I will initiate a roll call for the Divine Nine members in the audience.
