Event Information
I will start by having teachers sit in groups of different language ( if any teach languages other than English), if they all teach English then group them by different grade levels and give them T charts to create their own individual list of Do's and Don'ts in a Literature or reading session 5 mins . Then have them discuss and with a cooperative structure ' fickle finger of fate' have each group choose one spokesperson to share collective list of Do's and Don'ts , have the rest reflect and add to their own T charts ( 5 mins).
Share my own list of Do's and Don'ts then move to ways to start a literature class in an interactive manner: a) Lesson Starters: Give out a chapter ( hand out excerpt ) from The Rail Way children ' Coal Thief' have the same groups read it and each engage in a differentiated while reading task . A)A group will role play it in their own words, using key vocabulary , B)Another group will plot the main events , conflict and give advise to Peter on a Graffiti wall c) Another group will Create " Find the Fib 'tasks and d) another group will create' Paraphrase Passport' questions and answers. All groups will share their findings . ( 15 mins)
Play videos showing 3 ways of retelling stories in fun ways and discuss ( 5 mins)
Play videos showing fun ways to pre-teach vocabulary and discuss ( 8 mins)
Discuss while reading strategies ( Second chance) 5 mins
Discuss post reading strategies ( Dramatic monologue ) 5 mins
Discuss evidence based closure activities ( Time machine-invisible character-Day in court- Open mind) 10 mins
Discuss assessment opportunities : ( Create a Facebook page for a character ) 5 mins
Wrap up with a general reflection
All through out the session teachers will be working in groups and engaged in activities and get a flavour of the learner's experience through active participation and peer to peer interaction.
