Session description

Explore Dos and Don'ts to enhance the efficiency of literature and 2nd language classes. Including pre, while, and post reading activities; cooperative and differentiated structures to approach texts, novels, or comprehension passages with a focus on quality feedback. Engage in applying teaching strategies at different phases of the lesson and own reflections.

Outline

I will start by having teachers sit in groups of different language ( if any teach languages other than English), if they all teach English then group them by different grade levels and give them T charts to create their own individual list of Do's and Don'ts in a Literature or reading session 5 mins . Then have them discuss and with a cooperative structure ' fickle finger of fate' have each group choose one spokesperson to share collective list of Do's and Don'ts , have the rest reflect and add to their own T charts ( 5 mins).
Share my own list of Do's and Don'ts then move to ways to start a literature class in an interactive manner: a) Lesson Starters: Give out a chapter ( hand out excerpt ) from The Rail Way children ' Coal Thief' have the same groups read it and each engage in a differentiated while reading task . A)A group will role play it in their own words, using key vocabulary , B)Another group will plot the main events , conflict and give advise to Peter on a Graffiti wall c) Another group will Create " Find the Fib 'tasks and d) another group will create' Paraphrase Passport' questions and answers. All groups will share their findings . ( 15 mins)

Supporting research

I rely heavily on Kagan Cooperative structures for simultaneous engagement and many activities are inspired by this book :

I always use ideas and read articles on Edutopia, this is a sample: https://www.edutopia.org/article/incorporating-design-thinking-study-literature/
