Session description

Leaders today face tremendous pressure. Constant shaming for low test scores and swings of the pedagogy pendulum can shift focus from the most important tasks of instructional leadership. Participants will learn five rules to guide instructional leadership and explore realistic steps to improve outcomes and close gaps in their schools.

Outline

I. Welcome & Introductions (5 minutes) – Presenter will gather and share information about the teacher, classroom, school, district, higher education and other leaders in the presentation. Participants will do a 2-minute quick write about their current instructional leadership goals.

II. The Five Rules of Leadership (5 segments) – The presenter will share the rules of instructional leadership to help guide leaders in their leadership planning. For each rule, the presenter will provide a planning tool/template for use by leaders.

a. Practicing Ambitious Realism (15 minutes) – The presenter will discuss the importance of setting meaningful and appropriately ambitious goals for all students. Leaders will work with a partner to identify examples and non-examples of practicing ambitious realism.

c. Acting Like the Sun (15 minutes) – The presenter will work with leaders to identify ways of providing effective support and accountability for improvements in instruction.
