Session description

Multilingual learners need support engaging in conversations. Casual and academic conversations are crucial for building language proficiency and social-emotional resilience. Come learn strategies for scaffolding talk and conversations using interviews, and video and sound editing. Best of all, students will work to build a collaborative community in your classroom.

Outline

Participants will first engage in a quickwrite (5-7 minutes) describing themselves or something they want people to know about them. Then, they'll be introduced to Vogue's 73 Questions With...style interviews. They'll watch portions of a Vogue interview with Zendaya (5-7 minutes) and reflect on the video by taking notes on what they've learned about Zendaya and anyways in which she might be similar to or different from them. Then, we'll rewatch the video, this time focused on the craft of writing interview questions (7-10 minutes). They'll take note of some of the questions Zendaya was asked, and then as a group, we'll debrief how good interview questions will be written. Then, participants will watch the video for a for a third round of study, this time focusing in on the framing and presentation. As a group, we'll debrief how Zendaya's interview was staged, and brainstorm how they would want their interview to be staged.

Then, they'll work with a partner (in classrooms, partners can be assigned) to plan interview questions, rehearse the interview, and record it. Once all interviews are recorded, we'll work as a group to edit them in Canva (15-20 minutes).

After videos are edited, they'll be shared by linking them on a shared document for the class to watch and reflect on (15-20 minutes).
