Session description

Student-directed learning gives students significant autonomy in content, process, and product, and is meaningful, purposeful, and sometimes joyful. See examples of how secondary teachers have integrated student-directed learning into coursework and also met academic standards. Reflect on the challenges of implementation and advantages for both students and teachers.

Outline

I am a very interactive presenter and audience questions always drive the conversation.

I will begin by asking what participants hope to learn and why they are there. (5 minutes)

I will briefly address why autonomy is a developmental need for middle and secondary students. (5 minutes)

I will share a continuum of student autonomy ranging from teacher-directed to student-directed so participants will understand the differences. Q &A audience concerns(10 minutes)

Participants will review student-directed projects and ask questions.(15 minutes)

I will share student and teacher comments about the rewards of student-directed learning.(5 minutes)

Participants and presenter will discuss challenges in implementation.(20 minutes)
