Session description

Teachers will explore innovative digital resources that inspire and empower students to express their ideas through writing. From interactive book-creating apps to collaborative platforms, discover how to engage students in writing by providing simple platforms to publish to an authentic audience and make writing educational, fun, and dynamic!

Outline

We will begin by exploring the power of creating and storytelling by working in a collaborative Book Creator book or Padlet to share our thoughts and ideas. We will watch a short video or read an article about the importance of storytelling and writing for young learners. (10 minutes). The presenter will then explain the ISTE standards that will be addressed, and that while there are many digital tools that can be used, today we will focus on three of those tools. Participants will learn about the tool and then have the opportunity to explore and experience it. (5) The first tool shared will be ChatterPix Kids. This is a free app that can be downloaded. Presenter will have some devices available for participants to explore with and will bring some hands on examples that they can use. After introducing and providing examples, participants will get the chance to try it out. (10 min) The next tool shared will be Seesaw. The presenter will share how students can use the creative tools in Seesaw to publish writing and use the microphone to read what they write. They can be published in Seesaw and shared with families. Examples will be shared, and participants will be invited to join a Seesaw class to try out the tools. (10 min) The last tool shared will be WriteReader, a book creating app that is simple yet powerful. Presenter will share ideas for preserving indigenous language using this tool, including some dictionaries created using the Crow language by 2nd graders. The presenter will share how these can then be published to Seesaw to share out. Participants will have time to start their own WriteReader books. (10 min) There will be additional time at the end to share out examples on our Padlet or in our collaborative book, as well as to have a Q&A session.
