Session description

With tightening budgets, regulations, and advancing technology, education leaders must assess if programs truly enhance learning. This session clarifies the differences between research-based and evidence-based products, and how to apply this knowledge when evaluating edtech. Experts will explain seals, certifications, and badges for district decision-makers.

Outline

Introduction (2 minutes)
Participants will understand the purpose and structure of the session.

Background of Research-Based and Evidence-Based Requirements (5 minutes)
Participants will gain a deep understanding of the historical context of the No Child Left Behind and the Every Student Succeeds Act that led to the research-based and evidence-based requirements in K-12 education.

Research-Based (5-7 minutes) – Device-Based Activity
Participants will develop a clear understanding of what it means for a product to be research-based and the associated badges, seals and certifications that can be used to identify products and their quality.

Evidence-Based (5-7 minutes) – Device-Based Activity
Participants will develop a clear understanding of what it means for a product to be evidence-based and the associated badges, seals and certifications that can be used to identify products and their quality.

Product Badges, Seals & Certifications (5 minutes) – Peer-to-Peer Interaction
Participants will understand the identification of verified products through badges, seals, and certifications, and confidently engage in peer discussions about their significance in evaluating EdTech solutions.

Research-Based Requirements and Process (Digital Promise/ISTE Seal Panelist) (10-12 minutes)
Participants will comprehend the rigorous processes and standards that organizations use to evaluate and certify EdTech products as research-based, ensuring they meet educational needs.

Evidence-Based Requirements and Process (LearnPlatform Panelist) (10-12 minutes)
Participants will comprehend the rigorous processes and standards that organizations use to evaluate and certify EdTech products as evidence-based, ensuring they meet educational needs.

Evaluating EdTech Products Tips (5-7 minutes) – Device-Based Activity
Participants will leave equipped with actionable tips and hands-on strategies for effectively evaluating and selecting high-quality EdTech products to enhance student learning.
