Session description

Unleash your students' inner "digital detective"! Elementary learners develop critical thinking skills for safe social media use. Learn age-appropriate strategies to tackle misinformation and navigate online interactions. Use creative engaging social media literacy programs that empower young minds to develop life skills to navigate in the digital world!

Outline

Since this is for a poster session of course the time will vary based on the interest and questions of the attendees.

Introduction (5 minutes)
Briefly introduce myself and my background as a Google Trainer and Google Innovator, sharing this as my Innovator Project. I will highlight the increasing relevance of social media literacy for K-6 students.
We will discuss my How might we statement "How might we equip young students (K-6) with critical thinking skills to be smart online detectives while navigating social media?" Briefly share real world examples from interviews with educators and students on this project. Encourage participants to share their experiences. 5-10 minutes

Explain how the session addresses the ISTE Standards for Digital Citizenship:

Digital Footprint (1.2.a): Fostering mindful online behavior by equipping students with critical thinking skills to evaluate online information and understand algorithms.

Online Interactions (1.2.b): Promoting empathetic and inclusive interactions online by emphasizing constructive online discussions and ethical social media use.

Digital Privacy (1.2.d): Encouraging students to protect their digital privacy and manage their personal data while online through safe social media use and critical thinking.

Present practical strategies and examples of how to integrate these standards into existing curriculum and classroom activities.

Share resources and tools that can support the implementation of these standards and discuss additional ideas.

Demonstrate interactive activities and games that can be used to teach these concepts to young children.
