Session description

AI is all around us. Its time to try something new. In this experience, teachers learn how they can leverage generative AI to introduce students to environmental stewardship and science via a topic that we all play a role in but rarely think about - textile pollution. Think about the clothes you are wearing right now. Where did they come from? When you are done with them, where will they go? The textile industry makes 80-100 billion garments annually while recycling less than 1% globally. Many end up in landfills - some so big they can be seen from space. In this lesson, we explore this challenge and learn how chemistry (particularly Near Infrared Spectroscopy) can effectively sort textiles by taking deep pictures of fabrics. We explore a simple textile dataset using Generative AI and learn how AI can play a key role in scientific solutions to global problems.

Outline

Outline - the session is planned for 1 hour but can be extended with more activities if needed.

- Getting to know each other (Padlet - Audience participation) - 5 min. For the audience to share their background and interests in environmental topics.

- What is textile pollution (10 min) - video and audience Q&A
We learn about the challenge of textile pollution and why textile sorting is hard.

- Learn why chemistry and NIRS is important (high level -no chemistry experience needed) - 5 min
A brief introduction to why near infrared spectroscopy helps us "see inside fabrics" and sort them.

- Show to to use ChatGPT to explore NIRS (5 min) - demo of activity

- Audience explores while presenter facilitates (15 min) - Audience activity/participation. Audience will take a small NIRS dataset and conduct a self-directed exploration using ChatGPT.

- What did we learn (Padlet - Audience participation) - 5 min

- More online resources (5 min)

- Close (5 min)
