Event Information
Content & Engagement
1. Welcome & Framing (5 minutes)
Introduce session goals and ISTE Student Standards (Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer).
Icebreaker: Participants respond to a prompt designed to surface empathy (e.g., “Tell me about a time you felt misunderstood at school.”)
2. Empathy & AI Foundations (10 minutes)
Overview of the Stanford Empathy Interview protocol.
Discussion: Why empathy matters in digital learning environments? How can AI help facilitate this learning?
3. AI Tools in Action with SchoolAI (15 minutes)
Live demo of SchoolAI chatbots simulating empathy interviews.
Participants explore pre-built empathy interview scenarios on their devices.
Small group discussion: What felt authentic? What could be improved?
4. Design & Classroom Application (12 minutes)
Participants use a scaffolded template to draft a modeled empathy interview for students.
Brainstorm: How could this be adapted for different classroom contexts (grade levels, subjects, student needs)?
Quick demo: How to build a custom SchoolAI chatbot.
Hands-on: Participants build and test their own empathy-focused chatbot.
5. Wrap-Up: Empathy as a Skill (3 minutes)
Group reflection: Why is it essential to intentionally build and practice empathy in schools?
Exit ticket: One way participants will apply empathy interviews or AI-supported dialogue in their own context.
Process & Engagement Tactics
Device-based activities: Participants interact with SchoolAI chatbots and build their own.
Hands-on creation: Attendees draft empathy interview models and build/test chatbots.
Reflection tools: Exit tickets and group discussion to synthesize learning and encourage classroom application.
After this session, participants will be able to:
Apply the Stanford Empathy Interview protocol to design AI-supported conversations that amplify student voice.
Identify connections between empathy-driven dialogue and the ISTE Student Standards, particularly around Digital Citizenship and Knowledge Constructor.
Create sample interview prompts and chatbot interactions that foster inclusive, student-centered engagement.
