Session description

District leaders from GenerationAI Communities of Practice share how they are designing AI policy and guidance at scale. Panelists will discuss key decisions, dilemmas, and tradeoffs as they balance risk and opportunity, establish clear guardrails, and create policies that support responsible educator practice and intentional student use of AI.

Outline

1. Welcome & Framing District-Level Decisions (5 minutes)

Content: Framing AI as a district leadership challenge involving policy, guidance, and learning design

Purpose of the session and introduction of panelists

Engagement & Process:

Quick audience poll (hands or QR): Where is your district in its AI policy journey?

Establish guiding question: How can policy enable learning rather than restrict it?

2. District Contexts & Policy Starting Points (15 minutes)

Content: Panelists briefly describe their district contexts and the initial questions or dilemmas that prompted AI policy work

Engagement & Process: Structured panel prompts to surface varied district sizes, timelines, and approaches

Audience encouraged to listen for common challenges and decision patterns

3. Policy Design, Tradeoffs, and Guardrails (25 minutes)

Content: Panelists discuss how policies and guidance were developed, including stakeholder engagement, risk considerations, and alignment to learning goals

Examples of how student use of AI is addressed within district guidance

Engagement & Process: Facilitated discussion with targeted follow-up questions

Audience questions collected verbally or via a digital backchannel

4. Peer Reflection & Application (10 minutes)

Content: Attendees reflect on how district examples relate to their own policy needs and constraints

Engagement & Process: Structured table discussion using guiding questions

Participants identify one policy question, principle, or next step to explore in their district

5. Synthesis & Key Takeaways (5 minutes)

Content: Facilitator synthesizes themes across districts

Reinforce the role of policy in expanding opportunity and agency

Engagement & Process: Exit reflection: One policy idea or leadership move I’m taking forward

Verbal or digital share to close the session
