Session description

It's not exactly a news flash to say that this is a tough time to be a teacher. In this positive and practical session, we'll explore how teachers can recover their swaggers, refresh their spirits, and rekindle their professional fires–and why this is so crucial for our students.

Outline

The session will be active and interactive. I'll share interesting and engaging content, and participants will share and talk together through partner chats and other interactive learning structures to process what they're learning and share with others.

Introductions and Warm-Up (10 min.): After a brief personal introduction in which I share some of my own past struggles with burnout, participants will warm up with table/partner chats about challenges they face in their current roles. I'll then set the stage for the session and encourage folks to look for specific ideas that will apply to their current challenges.

A Few Key Mindsets (5 min.): Before we dig into the "what" and the "how" of this session, it's important to help connect with teachers' "why". I'll share a few key mindsets teachers might adopt in order to help them prioritize their own personal and professional health and balance.

Basic Needs and Intrinsic Motivations (25 min.): Participants will learn about a few foundational health needs and six key psychological needs and how to leverage these positively in their everyday practice. Participants will discuss these ideas in small groups and consider which ones might be especially relevant for their situations.

Goal Setting and Building New Positive Habits (15 min.): I will lead participants through a planning process as they work to set positive achievable goals that will benefit them and their students. This will include an understanding of how habits form and many practical strategies for helping shift into new positive habits.

Closing (5 min.): I'll offer some other resources educators might use (through a free online binder) to deepen their thinking and support their ongoing implementation. Participants will have one final partner chat about what they are looking forward to trying.
